AI Automation Briefing: Ask to See the Approval Path

A practical look at n8n's documented human-review capability and the questions consultants should ask before proposing an AI workflow.

AI Automation Briefing: Ask to See the Approval Path

Platform briefing, checked September 18, 2026.

When evaluating an AI automation platform for a client, look for a way to review a proposed action before it changes another system. That is a more concrete buying question than whether a tool is described as “agentic.”

What n8n documents

In its Human Oversight playbook, published March 9, 2026, n8n describes human review for AI tool calls. A review step can sit between an agent and a tool, pausing a proposed action for approval or denial. The same guide distinguishes this from reviewing generated text in a chat and describes routing review requests through supported communication channels.

This is an existing documented capability, not a release announced today. Check the current platform version and available integrations before including it in a proposal.

What to ask during a client demo

Use a harmless test record and ask the demonstrator to show the entire approval path. Seeing an approval button is only part of the evidence. You also need to see what happens in the destination system.

  • Can the reviewer see the exact recipient, record, and proposed change?
  • Does declining leave the destination unchanged?
  • What happens when nobody answers?
  • Can the proposed action change after it was approved?
  • Can a person find the outcome later without asking the consultant?

These are evaluation questions, not claims that a default configuration answers them correctly. Record the behavior you actually observe.

Make the service promise specific

For a pilot, a clear deliverable might be: “Prepare a draft response and present it to the designated reviewer; send only after that response is approved.” Agree on who reviews, the hours they cover, and how unresolved requests return to ordinary staff handling.

Avoid promising that a review step eliminates errors. It adds another part of the process that needs an owner. A reviewer still needs enough context and time to make a useful decision.

Price the work you can describe

A proposal can separate setup, testing, staff instruction, and ongoing maintenance. Note which platform subscriptions the client will need and verify current terms before quoting them. Keep projected savings separate from measured results.

The practical consulting opportunity is to help a business choose and operate an appropriate workflow. It does not require presenting every existing feature as breaking news.
