Evaluate an AI Tool by How You Can Leave It

Before committing a client workflow to an AI tool, check exports, account ownership and the manual fallback. Make the exit test part of evaluation.

Evaluate an AI Tool by How You Can Leave It

A polished demo shows how work enters a tool. A useful evaluation also asks how the business would retrieve that work and continue if the tool no longer fit.

For consultants, an exit test belongs beside the feature checklist. It is not a prediction that the vendor will fail. It is preparation for changing requirements.

List what the client must keep

For a proposed workflow, identify the inputs, outputs, settings and decision history that matter to the business. A collection of generated text may be easy to export while the relationships between records are harder to preserve.

Use fictional data for the evaluation unless the client has approved another arrangement. Do not upload a live customer database merely to see whether an export button exists.

Try an actual export

Check the current vendor documentation and plan terms, then export the test material. Open it outside the tool. Can an authorized person understand it? Are important identifiers, attachments or dates included? Note what is absent rather than assuming an unfamiliar file format is complete.

Record which plan you tested and when. Availability can differ by account or subscription, so a feature shown in a demo may not be part of the client's proposed purchase.

Identify the account owner

Decide who controls billing and administrative access. The client should understand any dependency on a consultant-owned account and the agreed process for changing that arrangement. Use individual authorized access rather than passing around one shared password.

Describe a workable pause

If the tool is unavailable, what stops and what can staff do manually? For an inquiry-drafting workflow, the fallback might be ordinary drafting from the original inbox, with automated sending kept outside the pilot. Other workflows will need different arrangements.

Include the exit findings in your recommendation: what can be retrieved, what requires work and what remains uncertain. A cheaper subscription is not automatically a cheaper transition.

AI Consultant Launchpad helps frame practical consulting work. Evaluate the client's ability to keep operating, not just the tool's ability to impress during the first hour.
